Südpack Collaborates with Leibinger to Evaluate CJI Inks for Recyclable Films
SÜDPACK and LEIBINGER are collaborating on a project with the goal of evaluating CJI inks for printing on recyclable films for food packaging. Packaging industry policies in the EU are becoming increasingly stringent. The EU has the ambitious goal of turning all packaging into recyclable alternatives by 2030. Composite plastic materials are harder to recycle and thus the EU market is seeing a shift from composites to monomaterials. When there is a material change on packaging, manufacturers must ensure that all aspects of the packaging are suitable for the given application, in this case packaging food. This of course includes the ink used to print expiration dates and other important information on the packaging. If packaging manufacturers do not equip these new monomaterial films with some sort of barrier function that shields food contents from the ink it will mean that they can only use inks that are safe for food contact. Depending on the circumstances the requirements for production, coding, and marking of packaging films may change. This is precisely why SÜDPACK and LEIBINGER are collaborating to test whether the latter’s CJI ink is suitable for the marking of recyclable food packaging and if the inks can withstand the sterilization process that packaging materials have to go through. After running a sterilization test of the ink on the packaging they found that the printed labeling was still legible. The sterilization resistance of ink is always a difficult challenge to overcome, however in this case LEIBINGER was happy to find that its CJI ink is appropriate for printing on recyclable monomaterials.
