Amcor to Close Alabama Facility as Part of Post-Merger Consolidation Strategy
Amcor to Close Alabama Facility as Part of Post-Merger Consolidation Strategy
Following the recent completion of its $8.4 billion merger with Berry Global, international packaging giant Amcor has announced plans to close a plastics manufacturing facility in Lanett, Alabama. The closure, which will begin on July 1, 2025, will impact 112 employees, according to a Worker Adjustment and Retraining Notification (WARN) notice filed with the Alabama Department of Commerce.
The Lanett facility, previously operated by Berry Global, is being shut down as part of Amcor’s broader post-merger consolidation efforts. The company stated that production from the Lanett plant will be integrated into other Amcor locations. An Amcor spokesperson, in communication with AL.com, cited “changing market conditions” as a key factor behind the decision.
The closure announcement came just one day before the official completion of the merger on April 30. In line with federal regulations, the WARN Act requires large employers to provide advanced notice of significant layoffs or plant closures, offering workers time to prepare and seek new opportunities.
Amcor has pledged to support the affected employees, helping them explore roles within the company’s global network or transition to new positions in the community. Despite the closure, Amcor will maintain a manufacturing presence in Alabama through its facility in Montgomery.
Amcor CEO Peter Konieczny described the merger's completion as “a defining day” for the company. He emphasized that the integration strengthens Amcor’s market positions, expands its customer offerings, and enhances material science and innovation capabilities. Konieczny also credited the integration teams for completing the complex merger in under six months—ahead of schedule.
As Amcor realigns its operations to optimize efficiencies and scale, the Lanett facility’s closure underscores the broader operational shifts taking place in the wake of one of the packaging industry’s largest recent mergers. Learn more about this topic here.

Eco-Products Teams Up with San Francisco Giants to Promote Compostable Packaging at Oracle Park
Eco-Products Teams Up with San Francisco Giants to Promote Compostable Packaging at Oracle Park
Eco-Products® has officially joined forces with the San Francisco Giants as an Official Zero Waste Partner, supporting the team’s industry-leading sustainability efforts at Oracle Park. As part of this partnership, Eco-Products will provide compostable foodservice packaging to help boost the park’s waste diversion and composting initiatives.
With a systems-based approach, Eco-Products emphasizes collaboration between venue operations, foodservice providers, waste haulers, and composters. This holistic strategy is designed to reduce contamination from non-compostable materials and improve the efficiency of waste diversion programs.
“We’ve admired the waste diversion program at Oracle Park for a long time,” said Wendell Simonson, Director of Marketing at Eco-Products. “Helping the Giants use compostable packaging to keep food waste out of landfills is a milestone achievement.”
Alfonso Felder, Chief Operations and Experience Officer for the Giants, called the partnership “an important step” in Oracle Park’s commitment to sustainability. Rafe Gabel, Senior General Manager for Diamond 58, echoed the sentiment, emphasizing the role of compostable packaging in enhancing the fan experience and reducing waste.
Oracle Park has long been a sustainability pioneer. It is the only MLB ballpark to receive LEED Silver, Gold, and Platinum certifications. In 2024, the Giants received MLB’s first-ever Eco-Slugger Innovation Award and continue to lead the league with 13 Green Glove Awards.
Through a robust composting program with Recology, the Giants have increased their waste diversion rate to 97%. With Eco-Products now on board, the team’s green legacy is stronger than ever. Learn more about this topic here.
