Carlsberg Pushes Innovation Boundaries With Paper Bottle Design
Carlsberg Pushes Innovation Boundaries With Paper Bottle Design
Danish Beer Innovator Carlsberg works towards a highly ambitious goal of developing a first of its kind paper beer bottle made with materials that are recyclable, sustainable, biodegradable, and 100% plant-based. The company believes in doing what is possible in the moment even if the product is imperfect, and although they have a mountain of technical hurdles ahead of them they opt to at least create what they refer to as the "minimum viable product". With this approach they hope to at least have something tangible to excite their costumers and to test and improve over time. This step by step approach lead to the development of their first bottle concept referred to as version 1.0. The first version featured a molded fiber outer shell complemented with an injection stretch blow molded inner container composed of recycled PET (rPET). While the bottle design was not optimal in terms of their objectives it did have some of their desired qualities. Version 2.0 was a monumental improvement over 1.0, it featured the same injection stretch blow molding design for the inner lining except this time they used PEF supplied by Avantium. the main building block of PEF is furandicarboxylic acid (FDCA) which is bio-based and thus Carlsberg is one step closer to meeting their goals. Version 3.0 is already under development and it is expected to have an improved inner lining design as well as a first ever fiber-based screw cap. Learn more here.
