Mercury Plastics Expands Facility to House New Electron Beam Accelerator
Mercury Plastics Expands Facility to House New Electron Beam Accelerator
Mercury Plastics will break ground on a $15M facility expansion to accommodate a new 10MeV electron beam accelerator. The company provides custom thermoplastic products to various industries including Appliance, automotive, construction, electrical, faucet, liquid dispensing, marine, medical, off shore oil exploration, and plumbing. Mercury Plastics has made use of electron beam technology for 25 years, making them a leader in providing distinct approaches to the fabrication of thermoplastic products. According to the company, electron beam technology provides thermoplastics with many unique benefits which include improvement of long-term physical characteristics, chemical resistance, stress cracking and kink resistance, abrasion and wear resistance, and increased temperature capability. The new 10 MeV electron beam accelerator will be the second of its kind for Mercury Plastics, as they already operate a 5 MeV accelerator. The new 10 MeV unit will provide increased power and achieve improved dose uniformity. A 21,000- square foot expansion to the company’s northeast Ohio facility was required to accommodate this new equipment. Jay Burnett, President of Mercury Plastics mentioned “Mercury Plastics has been on the leading edge of utilizing this type of niche technology in the manufacture of thermoplastic products for decades.” He further explained that “Investment in a new electron beam accelerator demonstrates our commitment to supporting the long-term growth strategies of our current customers, and it also expands our capacity and ability to bring this unique technology to newer markets.” Learn more about this topic here.

Starbucks, Coca Cola Company, PepsiCo, and local restaurants in Petaluma, California will make reusable cups the default option, all as part of the Petaluma Reusable Cup Project. This is the first project that spans across the entire city of Petaluma with several different restaurants and brands as participants. The project launched last month and is set to run until early November. The initiative is being funded by the NextGen Consortium, led by the Center for the Circular Economy at Closed Loop Partners. The objective of this ambitious project is to encourage customers to develop return habits, which the consortium considers vital to the success of reuse. The city-wide pilot project involves over 30 restaurants, and Starbuck is one of the most involved brands with eight Starbucks shops forming part of the project. Regarding their participation senior manager, social impact communications for Starbucks, Beth Nervig mentioned, “Unlocking consumer behavior change on reusables with ease and convenience is key to advancing sustainability goals.” She further highlighted, “We’re out front leading the retail industry on a cultural shift toward reusables, but we know we can’t do it alone.” From now until November all participants will make purple reusable cups their default option for all drinks, several cup sizes will be available in this format, and no additional deposit will be required.
