SHL Medical Opens $220M U.S. Facility to Expand Autoinjector Manufacturing
SHL Medical Opens $220M U.S. Facility to Expand Autoinjector Manufacturing
SHL Medical has officially opened a $220 million manufacturing facility in North Charleston, South Carolina, marking a pivotal milestone in the company’s global expansion and U.S. market presence. The 360,000-square-foot site is SHL’s first major production facility in the United States and is designed to meet surging demand for its autoinjector portfolio across North America.
Equipped with advanced injection molding and automated assembly lines, the state-of-the-art facility will support high-volume production of autoinjectors used in treating endocrine and metabolic disorders—including GLP-1 therapies—as well as dermatological and musculoskeletal conditions. The site has already created more than 300 jobs, with further hiring expected as operations scale.
“This U.S.-based production hub reinforces our position as the leader in end-to-end drug delivery solutions,” said SHL CEO and Chairman Ulrich Faessler. The North Charleston facility complements SHL’s operations in Florida, Taiwan, and Switzerland, and plays a key role in reaching the company’s target of supplying 1.5 billion autoinjector units globally by 2025.
The new plant also reflects SHL’s strategy of localizing production to mitigate global supply chain risks and improve responsiveness to regional markets. As part of its vertical integration, SHL has made strategic acquisitions—including SHL Advantec and automation companies—to further enhance its production capabilities.
“The most trusted autoinjector brand is now made in the USA,” said Kimberlee Steele, SHL’s North America Managing Director. The facility launch was celebrated with local and international dignitaries, highlighting SHL’s growing impact on both the healthcare industry and the South Carolina economy. SMX and Aegis Packaging Launch Breakthrough Sustainable Packaging Initiative
SMX and Aegis Packaging Launch Breakthrough Sustainable Packaging Initiative
SMX, a leader in digitizing physical products for the circular economy, has announced a strategic partnership with Aegis Packaging, a Singapore-based innovator in high-barrier coatings. The collaboration introduces a transformative “physical to digital” solution aimed at addressing the global demand for circular, transparent, and efficient plastic packaging.
By integrating SMX’s invisible molecular markers and blockchain-based traceability platform with Aegis Packaging’s O₂X™ coating technology, the partnership enables full lifecycle tracking of plastic materials. This powerful combination delivers both high-performance barrier properties and end-to-end recyclability—making sustainable packaging a practical and scalable reality.
Aegis’s O₂X™ coating allows mono-material, recyclable plastics to replace traditionally non-recyclable multi-layer alternatives without sacrificing performance. SMX’s permanent molecular markers, embedded during production, allow real-time verification of recycled content, usage history, and origin—streamlining compliance with evolving global ESG regulations.
“This collaboration ensures businesses can easily document and prove sustainability claims,” said Ong Kai Liang, Business Development Manager at Aegis Packaging. “With O₂X™ and SMX’s traceability tools, we’re turning sustainable packaging from aspiration into action.”
The joint solution eliminates common barriers to recycling, such as poor traceability and costly audits. By digitizing verification processes, companies gain faster access to compliance data, reduce greenwashing risks, and build consumer trust through verified transparency.
This initiative sets a new benchmark in the packaging industry by uniting innovative materials science with robust digital verification—offering a clear path toward circularity, brand integrity, and environmental responsibility. Learn more here.
